"Crying by the River"
George Gao - erhu
"Crying by the River" is a traditional Chinese folk tune, it originates from North East China, we don't know who was the composer. The tune was originally played by GuanZi, a double reed woodwind Chinese folk instrument like an oboe, expect the timbre of the guanzi is very raw, rustic, unlike the refined sound of an oboe. In the fifth or sixties last century, an erhu player Huang Hai Hui adapted the tune for erhu, however it was another erhu virtuoso Min Hui Fen who made it one of the most popular tunes at the time by her expressive, emotional performance of the tune. This version of Crying by the River is a version of George Gao's performance.
